Translated as ‘open air’ from French, en plein air painting was pioneered by John Constable in Britain c.1813–1. Traditionally, painters would work from their studios, using paints made by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil. With the introduction of paints in tubes in the 1870s, painting outside became a much more popular .

Over the three days, you will be introduced to how to set up, which materials to use, and how to choose and complete your a composition. Taking you through colour mixing and colour temperature exercises and how various plein air painters such as Joseph Mallord William Turner captured atmosphere and excitement.

This course will involve some walking and painting outdoors.

Absolutely nothing! All materials and aprons are provided although some people do like to bring their own set of brushes.
